In practice at Pennsylvania Hospital since 1988, Matt L. Kirkland, MD has developed a practice focused on gastrointestinal and oncologic surgery. This includes surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the breast, endocrine surgery, surgery of the gastrointestinal tract including complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures (gall bladder, liver, bile duct, and pancreas), and abdominal wall hernias. As one of the first surgeons in the region doing laparoscopic general surgery he has acquired extensive experience with the minimally invasive approach for cholecystectomy, colon resection, splenectomy, antireflux surgery, esophageal myotomy, partial gastrectomy, abdominal wall hernias, and laparoscopic staging of abdominal malignancies.

Dr. Kirkland is board certified and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. His papers and presentations have focused on laparoscopic cholecystectomy and its complications, the role of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and management of abdominal malignancies, and the surgical management of esophageal carcinoma.

Dr. Kirkland was listed in Philadelphia magazine's "top doc's" for 2002.
